Before catching our 4:30 PM train back home to Wiesbaden, we had just enough time to squeeze in one final, quintessential Dutch experience.
Wandering the Windmills at Zaanse Schans
Our first stop felt like stepping straight into a 12th-century landscape painting at Zaanse Schans. This open-air museum is famous for its brilliantly preserved, historic green wooden houses and collection of massive, functional windmills lining the banks of the Zaan River. Walking among these towering giants, you get a real sense of early Dutch industrial power. The sheer mechanics of the sails catching the North Sea wind and turning heavy stone gears right above your head is an incredible sight to see up close.

Cheese: Preserving Old-World Trades
From the river banks, we headed to the famous fishing village of Volendam for a deep dive into two of the country’s most legendary traditions:
- The Cheese Factory Volendam: We stepped inside for a live cheese-making demonstration where experts walked us through the traditional techniques used to craft flawless blocks of Gouda and Edam. The best part? A massive tasting session that let us sample everything from mild, young cheeses to deeply aged, sharp varieties.

Sailing the IJsselmeer to Marken
To round out the “All-in” experience, we boarded a traditional ferry for a unique, 30-minute boat trip across the choppy waters of the IJsselmeer, sailing from the harbor of Volendam to the former island of Marken. Sitting on the deck with the salt spray in the air, looking back at the colorful harbor houses fading into the distance, was a beautiful moment of tranquility. Marken itself is an absolute jewel, famous for its historic stilt houses and quiet, isolated village charm.

HyThe Wooden Shoe Demonstration: Next, we learned the fascinating history behind traditional Dutch clogs. The real highlight for the kids was watching how these classic wooden shoes are carved and shaped with the help of a functioning, antique steam engine. Watching the old machinery whir to life and transform a block of raw timber into a wearable shoe in a matter of minutes was pure mechanical magic.

Heading Home to Wiesbaden
We made it back to Amsterdam Central Station with just enough time to grab our bags and board the 4:30 PM train back to Wiesbaden. As the Dutch countryside blurs past our window and transitions back into the familiar hills of Germany, we are heading home with tired legs, full hearts, and a suitcase packed with cheese. Amsterdam, you were incredible to us yet again. Until next time!
