After yesterday’s deep dive into the history of the Dutch countryside, today was all about embracing the vibrant, hands-on energy of Amsterdam itself. We structured the day around science, sprawling street markets, and wild nature play, making it an absolute hit for both the kids and our sore walking feet.

Hands-On Discovery at the NEMO Science Museum
We kicked off our morning at the NEMO Science Museum, an unmistakable landmark housed in a massive, copper-green building shaped like the hull of a ship rising directly out of the Eastern Docklands. Inside, the museum features five sprawling floors packed with fully interactive science exhibitions.
The philosophy here is completely hands-on: the kids were encouraged to touch, build, pull, and experiment with everything from giant soap bubbles to kinetic chain reactions. It was the perfect environment to let them run wild while flexing their brains.
The real crown jewel for the adults, however, was the rooftop square known as Energetica. This massive, cascading open-air terrace is completely free to the public and offers a panoramic view of Amsterdam’s historic harbor. While the kids gleefully splashed around the interactive water features and learned about solar and wind energy firsthand, we grabbed a couple of coffees at the rooftop café, sat back, and soaked in the skyline under the open sky. At first begrudgingly, but then very enthusiastically. The kids enjoyed conducting laboratory science experiments, including how water makes plant cells contract and how to make a rocket.

A Sensory Overload at the Albert Cuyp Markt

By early afternoon, we had worked up a massive appetite, so we made our way to the bustling neighborhood of De Pijp to tackle the legendary Albert Cuyp Markt. Operating since 1905, this is the busiest open-air market in Europe, stretching for blocks and lined with hundreds of stalls.
Walking down the central lane is a total sensory overload in the best way possible. The air is thick with the competing aromas of sizzling frites, fresh flowers, and melting sugar. We completely surrendered to the local street food culture, snacking our way down the market. The absolute highlight was watching a vendor press fresh, hot stroopwafels right in front of us, sandwiching a thick layer of warm caramel syrup between two thin, crispy wafers. Eating them warm while navigating the eclectic mix of clothing, fabric, and fresh fish stalls felt like a quintessential Amsterdam afternoon.
Going Wild at Natuurspeeltuin Het Woeste Westen
We wrapped up our whirlwind day by escaping the brick and concrete entirely, heading over to the western edge of the city to visit Natuurspeeltuin Het Woeste Westen (The Wild West Nature Playground).
This isn’t your standard neighborhood playground with plastic slides and swings. Instead, it’s a beautifully wild, rugged landscape designed specifically for nature play. The entire area is woven with shallow streams, muddy islands, log bridges, and hidden willow-branch tunnels. The kids spent the final hours of daylight running across wooden planks, navigating rafts across the water, and getting delightfully muddy. It was a spectacular, unstructured end to the day that allowed them to just be kids in the fresh air.
Now, we are finally heading back to the hotel to wash off the mud, unpack our market finds, and get some hard-earned sleep before our final adventures in the city tomorrow.
