The day begins in the enchanting walled city of Lucca, one of Tuscany’s most captivating destinations. Unlike many medieval cities, Lucca’s Renaissance-era walls remain completely intact, now transformed into a tree-lined promenade encircling the old town. Exploring them by bike or even a multi-person rickshaw offers a unique perspective of the city’s red-tiled rooftops, bell towers, and hidden gardens.

Among Lucca’s most famous landmarks is the Torre Guinigi, a 14th-century tower crowned with ancient oak trees—a rare symbol of resilience and renewal. Music lovers will also appreciate Lucca as the birthplace of Giacomo Puccini, one of Italy’s most celebrated opera composers. The Puccini Museum, located in his family home, shares his life story and compositions that later found audiences across the globe, including in the United States where his operas like La Bohème and Madama Butterfly became staples of American opera houses. Madama Butterfly in particular gained iconic status in the U.S., premiering at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1907.

Just outside Lucca lies the charming village of Collodi, forever tied to one of the most beloved children’s tales in the world—Pinocchio. Written by Carlo Lorenzini, who adopted the pen name “Collodi” from this very village, The Adventures of Pinocchio was first published in 1883 and went on to inspire countless adaptations, including the beloved 1940 Walt Disney film. Its moral lessons of honesty, courage, and perseverance have resonated across generations and continents, making Pinocchio a cultural icon recognized from Italy to America. Today, Parco di Pinocchio offers visitors an enchanting journey through sculptures, gardens, and storytelling trails that bring the wooden puppet’s adventures to life.

From Lucca and Collodi, the day shifts from cobblestones and fairytales to the natural beauty of the Tuscan coast at Spiaggia della Lecciona. This pristine, unspoiled stretch of sand lies between Viareggio and Torre del Lago, backed by dunes and pine forests. Unlike more developed seaside resorts, Lecciona retains a wild charm, offering soft golden sand, gentle waves of the Tyrrhenian Sea, and views of the Apuan Alps in the distance. The beach’s location near Torre del Lago carries a musical legacy, as Puccini once called the nearby lakeside home, composing operas that would echo across the Atlantic.

This day blends history, literature, and leisure—linking the fortified streets of Lucca, the whimsical world of Pinocchio, and the untamed beauty of Lecciona’s shore, all touched in some way by stories and melodies that have traveled far beyond Italy, finding lasting places in American hearts and culture.
