What started as a casual sightseeing plan turned into an unexpected adventure on the Buda side of Budapest — complete with a virtual mystery, historical intrigue, royal guards, and a hearty bowl of goulash. Here’s how we explored Buda in the most immersive way: by joining a virtual game to save Queen Sisi from an assassin!

🎮 The Game: A Race to Save Queen Sisi

We kicked off our day near Buda Castle by joining an interactive augmented-reality (AR) exploration game that tasked us with uncovering clues, solving puzzles, and tracking down a would-be assassin targeting Queen Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary — better known as Sisi.

🕰️ Did you know? Queen Sisi was known for her love of Hungary and even learned the language fluently. Her beauty, tragic life, and unconventional views made her one of the most beloved royals in Central Europe.

As we moved through cobbled streets and courtyards, the game pulled us deeper into 19th-century Budapest. Each stop revealed fascinating pieces of history — and every correct puzzle brought us closer to saving Sisi.

🎖️ Change of the Guard at Buda Castle

Midway through our adventure, we caught the Change of the Guard ceremony at the Sándor Palace, the official residence of the Hungarian President.

With sharp uniforms, synchronized rifle spins, and a regal presence, the guards added an extra layer of grandeur to the historic surroundings. The kids were mesmerized — and it was a welcome real-life interlude between digital detective work.

🧍‍♂️ Fun Fact: The Hungarian Guard tradition dates back to the medieval royal court. Today’s guards blend modern discipline with centuries-old ceremonial flair.

🏰 Wandering through Fisherman’s Bastion

The game then led us up to one of Budapest’s most iconic landmarks: the Fisherman’s Bastion. This fairytale-like terrace offered sweeping views of the Danube River, Parliament Building, and the Pest side of the city.

🐟 Did you know? The bastion is named after the Fishermen’s Guild, which was responsible for defending this stretch of the city walls during the Middle Ages.

We paused for photos, admired the turrets, and let ourselves believe — just for a moment — that we had truly stepped into a historical drama.

🍲 Goulash Victory Feast

After successfully “saving the Queen,” it was time to reward ourselves — with a traditional Hungarian goulash served in a steaming clay pot. Hearty, flavorful, and comforting, it was the perfect end to our Buda-side mission.

🍴 Food Fact: Hungarian goulash is actually a soup, not a stew, made with paprika, potatoes, carrots, and tender chunks of beef. It’s a national dish and a must-try in any visit.
