Leaving Râșnov behind, we drove deep into the Carpathian Mountains, where winding roads cut through forests and misty valleys. The scenery alone was breathtaking, but the true highlight of the day was visiting the Libearty Bear Sanctuary in Zărnești.

Home to 121 bears, the sanctuary provides a safe haven for animals rescued from circuses, roadside attractions, and private captivity. Hearing their stories was sobering—many had spent years in tiny cages or forced to perform. Here, though, they roam in vast forested enclosures, climbing trees, splashing in pools, and finally living like bears should.

It costs nearly €2,000 every single day to feed and care for the bears, a reminder of the scale of this rescue mission and the importance of protecting wildlife. Watching the bears lumber peacefully through their new home was both heartwarming and humbling.

The drive through the mountains combined with the visit to the sanctuary made the day feel like a journey not just across landscapes, but across perspectives—from the wild beauty of nature to the responsibility we hold in caring for it.
