Our final day in Budapest was nothing short of iconic. With tired feet from days of exploring castles, synagogues, and cobbled streets, we treated ourselves to a few indulgent hours at one of the city’s most beloved institutions: the Széchenyi Thermal Baths.

Nestled in the heart of City Park, Széchenyi is the largest medicinal bath complex in Europe. Its thermal waters, rich in minerals, are sourced from natural hot springs that have drawn locals and travelers for over a century. We soaked in the outdoor pools as steam rose into the cool afternoon air, surrounded by neo-baroque architecture that made the entire experience feel like we had stepped into a Wes Anderson film. The locals playing chess chest-deep in the water only added to the charm.

Relaxed and recharged, we grabbed one last bite of goulash (you can never have too much) before heading to Keleti Railway Station, our bags in tow and anticipation building. It was time for a completely different kind of adventure: the overnight sleeper train to Romania.

Boarding felt like the start to an adventure, and a gentle rocking motion that would lull us to sleep as the train rumbled across Eastern Europe. There’s something magical about watching city lights fade into countryside from your window, bundled under a blanket with a night cap and the sounds of the tracks beneath you.

Next stop: Transylvania.
