Each September, the medieval jewel of Rothenburg ob der Tauber bursts into life for the Reichsstadt-Festtage, or Imperial City Festival β a vibrant celebration of its proud history as a Free Imperial City. In 1274, King Rudolf I of Habsburg granted Rothenburg this coveted status, freeing it from the control of local rulers and allowing it to flourish as a self-governing hub of trade, craftsmanship, and culture. Centuries later, that legacy still burns brightly β quite literally β as the town transforms into a living, breathing time capsule.
During the festival, the streets fill with knights and merchants, banners flutter from timbered houses, and the air hums with drumbeats and laughter. By day, medieval camps and markets bring the cityβs golden age to life; by night, torchlit parades and dazzling fireworks paint the sky, symbolizing Rothenburgβs resilience through war and fire. Itβs not just a spectacle β itβs a weekend where history walks beside you, where every stone, costume, and song tells the story of a city that once ruled itself and still carries the flame of its Imperial past.
