Palermo hits you all at once—gritty, colorful, loud, and completely alive. We dove straight into the chaos, weaving through the narrow alleys of Ballarò Market, where produce sellers sang out their prices like opera performers and scooters zipped by with no warning.
The air was thick with the scent of fried panelle, spices, and fresh citrus. You can grab snacks as we wandered—arancine, cannoli, and juicy peaches right off the stall—all while taking in the glorious contradiction of crumbling palazzos and Baroque churches.
Palermo doesn’t pretend to be perfect, and that’s exactly what makes it feel so real.
Eventually, we pointed the car south and traded the city’s soundtrack for birdsong and open skies. Checking into our agriturismo in the countryside, we were welcomed with olive groves, homemade wine, and the peaceful hush of rural Sicily.
