After days of diving deep into the history of cave dwellings and ancient tax evasion, we decided it was time to trade the “Sassi” for the “Safari.” Today was all about pure, unadulterated fun at Zoosafari Fasanolandia. Located just outside of Fasano, this is one of the largest wildlife parks in Europe, and it provided a perfect high-energy break for the boys.
The Safari Drive & Feeding Frenzy
The highlight of the morning was the drive-through safari. There is something surreal about winding through the Italian countryside and suddenly finding yourself nose-to-nose with a giraffe or a zebra. We were able to feed several animals from the car, which was an absolute blast—though you definitely have to be prepared for some very persistent (and hungry) new friends!
The Monorail Mystery
We eventually transitioned to the pedestrian and ride areas, which included a trip on the monorail out to the large animal enclosures.
Traveler’s Tip: The monorail logistics are a bit of a puzzle. You have to disembark at the far end and then get back in line to catch the monorail back to complete the loop, as there isn’t a walking path back to the main area. The line to return can get a bit long, but the views of the lions and bears from above make the wait worth it.
Monkey Business & Marine Magic
Any frustration from the monorail line vanished the moment we entered the monkey enclosure expedition. This was easily the most “WILD” part of the day. We were able to feed the monkeys, and their speed and antics were endlessly entertaining. It’s one of those rare experiences where you feel completely immersed in their world.
Later, we caught the sea lion show. It was a lovely, high-energy performance, though it’s worth noting that the park is very much a local favorite—the entire presentation was in Italian. It wasn’t a problem at all, but for anyone planning a visit, just be prepared to follow the action through the trainers’ cues rather than a translation!
Capping Off the Day
While some of the larger amusement park rides were closed for the season, we paid for a few of the open ones to get our adrenaline fix. Before heading out, we spent a significant amount of time in the Tropical Aquarium.
The boys were completely mesmerized by an exhibit that featured a lively mix of active turtles, lizards, and “mini” monkeys (marmosets) all sharing the same space. Watching them interact was the perfect quiet end to a very loud and exciting day.
Tomorrow, we shift gears once more as we head south to the “Florence of the South”—Lecce!
