Heading South finally back towards home and the ferry. We made two interesting stops along the way.

🇬🇧⚔️ Culloden Battlefield: The Day Scotland Changed Forever

Culloden isn’t just a major moment in Scottish history — it’s a turning point that rippled across the Atlantic. The 1746 battle marked the brutal end of the Jacobite rising, as Prince Charles Edward Stuart (“Bonnie Prince Charlie”) led his mostly Highland army into a disastrous final stand. Of the ~1,600 were killed, 1,500 were Jacobites in less than an hour. Charles himself escaped the carnage, famously fleeing disguised as a maid of Clan MacDonald and eventually exiled to France — never to return.

The visitor centre’s exhibits powerfully present both Jacobite and Government perspectives. One side of the gallery builds the Jacobite cause — their long-standing claim to the throne, Highland traditions, and romantic fervor. The other frames the Government’s response — disciplined troops, Hanoverian authority, and the use of modern military tactics. When the battle unfolds in the 360° theater room, it’s as if you’re standing in the middle of history, watching a culture unravel in real time.

After Culloden, the Highland way of life was dismantled — tartans banned, Gaelic suppressed, and clans disbanded. Many survivors later emigrated, settling in North America where their descendants would fight in another revolution. Today, the battlefield is quiet, haunting, and reverent — a place to remember not just the fallen, but the cultural loss that followed.

🌲🌊 Loch an Eilein – Pines, Ruins & Peace

📍 Rothiemurchus Estate, Cairngorms National Park

Tucked into a pine forest near Aviemore, Loch an Eilein is home to the romantic ruins of a 13th-century island castle once attacked by Jacobites. The loch is surrounded by gentle trails perfect for families and dogs. Fun fact: Scots pine forests like these were nearly extinct — but rewilding efforts have made this area a success story. The loch was once featured in BBC nature documentaries and inspired romantic poetry shared across the Atlantic during the Scottish diaspora.
