After bidding farewell to the peaceful beauty of Lake Orta, we began our journey north toward Zurich, trading Italian lakeside charm for Swiss alpine drama. The drive wound its way through changing landscapes—vineyard-draped hills, forested mountain passes, and the first glimmers of Swiss peaks—reminding us of how quickly Europe shifts in character from one border to the next.

About midway, we made a memorable stop at the Aare Gorge (Aareschlucht) East Entrance, near Meiringen. This natural wonder was carved over thousands of years by glacial meltwater, creating a narrow chasm where turquoise water rushes through towering limestone walls. The wooden walkways and tunnels allow visitors to get up close to the roaring river, with the cool, damp air a refreshing change from the warm Italian summer morning.

The gorge also holds a quirky historical tie to pop culture—the nearby town of Meiringen is famously connected to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes. Just a short distance away is the Reichenbach Falls, the dramatic setting of Holmes’s “death” in The Final Problem. While our stop didn’t allow time to visit the falls, the air of mystery seemed to drift down the valley.

By late afternoon, we rolled into Zurich and checked into our hotel, ready for one last evening in Switzerland. The journey from Italy to Switzerland in a single day had been more than just a change of scenery—it was a transition between cultures, histories, and landscapes, each leaving a distinct imprint on our trip.

Tomorrow would mark the end of our adventure, but for now, we enjoyed a quiet Swiss evening, reflecting on the many miles and memories gathered along the way.
