Our first stop was a quick drive by the Biebrich Palace. Its stunning baroque facade and riverside gardens are always a highlight, even for a brief visit. From there, we headed up to the Niederwald Monument. Standing at the top, looking out over the sprawling vineyards and the river valley below, you really get a sense of why this region inspired so many poets and painters.
To make the history come alive, we listened to the Rick Steves audio tour. Itβs such an easy way to pick up the stories behind the ruins and the “Best of the Rhine” highlights without needing a physical guide.

Crossing into History: Bacharach
We took the car ferry across the riverβalways a fun noveltyβand landed just north of Bacharach, a town that feels like itβs been frozen in time. While Mike sent the drone up to capture some stunning aerial views of the townβs layout, we explored the winding streets on foot.
Based on the local history, here are a few fascinating things we learned about the sites we saw:
- Altes Haus (Old House): This iconic half-timbered house dates back to around 1368. Itβs so picturesque that it famously inspired the operetta “When the little violets bloom.”
- The Market Tower: In the Middle Ages, the annual wine market was held right in front of this gate. The tower even housed the city bell in the 19th century and narrowly escaped destruction during a bombing in 1945.
- Wernerkapelle: This high-gothic ruins of a sandstone chapel stands as a solemn monument. Built between 1290 and 1430, it was partially destroyed in 1689 when the nearby Burg Stahleck was blown up by French troops.
- Malerwinkel (Painter’s Corner): This romantic spot is tucked away against the town walls. Itβs surrounded by half-timbered houses and lush gardens, earning its name as a favorite subject for artists over the centuries.

A Colorful Finale
We ended the day on a bright note at a nearby tulip field. After a day filled with medieval stone and ancient history, walking through rows of vibrant, blooming colors was the perfect way to wrap up our local adventure.
It was a whirlwind trip, but it reminded us that you donβt have to travel far to find world-class beauty.
