Leaving the quiet charm of our villa in Quiesa, a small Tuscan village surrounded by olive groves and soft hills, we began the next leg of our Italian road trip. Quiesa’s roots go back to the Middle Ages, when it was a farming and trade community linked to Lucca’s influence. Its narrow lanes and rustic stone houses offered one last reminder of rural Tuscany before we hit the road toward one of Italy’s most photographed landmarks—Pisa.
Just 30 minutes away, Pisa greeted us with its unmistakable Leaning Tower, standing on the Piazza dei Miracoli (Square of Miracles) alongside the ornate Cathedral and Baptistery. While millions visit for the famous tilt caused by unstable soil in the 12th century, Pisa has deeper stories to tell. During World War II, the city suffered significant bombing damage; the Leaning Tower narrowly escaped destruction when advancing American troops in 1944 halted artillery fire, fearing the loss of an irreplaceable piece of history. That decision preserved a global icon and forever linked Pisa’s survival to U.S. forces. Today, the tower remains a symbol of Italy’s resilience—and of how cultural treasures transcend wartime divisions.
From Pisa, we drove north toward La Spezia, a coastal city that serves as a gateway to the Cinque Terre. Once a strategic naval base for Italy, La Spezia also played a quiet but significant role in post-WWII history. In 1946–1948, it became a departure point for over 23,000 Jewish Holocaust survivors emigrating to Palestine, many supported by American relief organizations. This bittersweet chapter, now remembered at the Museo Ebraico and memorial sites, gives La Spezia a powerful place in the history of human hope and survival.
The drive from Tuscany to Liguria was a shifting canvas—rolling farmland giving way to rugged hills, and finally, the sparkling Ligurian Sea. Arriving in La Spezia for our two-night stay, we found ourselves at the crossroads of history, nature, and modern Italian life—a perfect place to pause before continuing our coastal adventures.
