There’s something magical about heading north in late November—when the first Christmas lights start to twinkle, markets awaken, and the air carries both frost and anticipation. Our family’s journey from Wiesbaden to Helsinki was a true winter road adventure: five countries, four currencies, one loyal dog, and countless memories packed into ten days.

We began in Poland, revisiting its festive charm in Poznań and Warsaw before crossing into Lithuania, our 29th country, to explore Kaunas and the legendary Trakai Castle, mirrored against the still waters of late autumn. Latvia came next, where Riga’s Art Nouveau streets and foggy riverbanks were laced with the scent of mulled wine and pine. In Estonia, the medieval magic of Tallinn’s Old Town met the kids’ excitement at the Kalev Spa Waterpark, a perfect blend of history and holiday cheer.

Finally, we sailed across the Gulf of Finland, arriving in Helsinki, our 32nd country, to close the journey among seaside parks, glowing saunas, and the cozy hum of a Nordic winter city preparing for Christmas.

From castle courtyards to cobbled streets, this route stitched together centuries of history and cultures along the Baltic spine—ending not on the road, but with a ferry gliding silently through icy waters toward home.
