Portugal’s Algarve coast has always called to me, a promise of golden cliffs and turquoise waters. Our recent weekend escape to Albufeira and a visit to the legendary Benagil Cave delivered on that promise, and then some. It was a perfect blend of relaxed beach vibes and breathtaking natural wonder.
Albufeira: More Than Just a Pretty Beach Town
Albufeira itself is a fascinating mix. Once a sleepy fishing village, it’s now a vibrant coastal hub, but it still retains pockets of its charm. We stayed close to the Old Town, a maze of cobbled streets, whitewashed buildings, and lively squares brimming with restaurants and shops.
The main draw, of course, is the beach. Fisherman’s Beach (Praia dos Pescadores) right in front of the Old Town, is expansive and beautiful. We spent a good part of Saturday simply soaking up the sun, listening to the waves, and watching the colorful fishing boats bob in the harbor, a nod to the town’s origins. There’s a tangible energy here, a blend of families enjoying the sand, couples strolling hand-in-hand, and the scent of grilled sardines wafting from beachfront eateries. It’s a place that buzzes with life but still allows for quiet moments by the sea.
The Crown Jewel: Benagil Cave
Sunday was dedicated to the main event: exploring the iconic Benagil Cave (Algar de Benagil). This natural sea cave is undoubtedly one of Portugal’s most famous landmarks, and for good reason. Its unique domed roof has a large opening—the “eye”—that allows sunlight to stream in, illuminating the small, sandy beach within.
To get there, we opted for a boat tour from Albufeira Marina. This was key, as swimming to the cave can be dangerous due to currents and boat traffic. Our boat was small enough to enter the cave, and as we approached, the sheer scale of the cliff faces was awe-inspiring. They’re a tapestry of oranges, ochres, and yellows, sculpted by millennia of wind and waves.
Entering Benagil was truly a ‘wow’ moment. The sunlight pouring through the “eye” created a surreal, ethereal glow on the turquoise water and golden sand. It felt like stepping into a hidden cathedral carved by nature itself. We weren’t allowed to disembark due to the number of boats and for safety, but simply floating inside, gazing up at the circular opening to the sky, was an unforgettable experience. The sound of the waves echoing off the cavern walls, the dappled light—it was pure magic.
The boat tour also took us along a stretch of the stunning coastline, revealing other hidden grottos, secluded beaches accessible only by sea, and more dramatic rock formations that define this part of the Algarve. Each turn offered another breathtaking vista, a testament to the raw beauty of Portugal’s southern edge.
A Weekend to Remember
Returning to Albufeira in the late afternoon, with the sun beginning to dip towards the horizon, we felt completely renewed. The contrast between the lively bustle of Albufeira and the serene majesty of Benagil Cave made for a perfectly balanced weekend. It was a reminder that sometimes, the most incredible experiences are found where land meets sea in the most dramatic ways.
The Algarve, with its golden cliffs and azure embrace, truly lives up to its reputation. We’re already dreaming of our next visit.
