For our first time in Norway, we based ourselves in Tromsø, and it turned out to be the perfect hub for Arctic adventure. This northern city may be cold, but it had more warmth and energy than we ever expected.

We started with a visit to the striking Arctic Cathedral (Ishavskatedralen), its sharp, modern lines glowing against the snow. Then we headed to the Science Center of Northern Norway, home to Norway’s northernmost planetarium, where we learned all about the science and stories behind the Northern Lights—a perfect primer before chasing them later in the trip.

And the food? The best hotel breakfast buffet we’ve ever had, hands down. Piles of fresh Norwegian salmon, warm pastries, and strong coffee set the tone for each day.

Despite the freezing temps, Tromsø felt surprisingly comfortable—thanks to smart layering and heated sidewalks that keep the city walkable without endless snow shoveling. The sun didn’t rise until nearly 10:00 AM and was gone by 4:00 PM, but the long twilight hours gave the whole place a magical glow.

And as a happy surprise, the city was lit with rainbow flags and cheerful lights—it was Pride Week! Even in the far north, there was no shortage of color, celebration, and community.

Tromsø was more than just a launchpad—it was a highlight all on its own.
