Seville is a city defined by its past—its Roman ruins, its Moorish palace, its Gothic cathedral. But after a superb dinner of slow-cooked carrillada and local wine, we decided to explore the city’s stunning embrace of the future, ascending the most striking, controversial, and modern structure in the ancient city: the Metropol Parasol.

Affectionately nicknamed Las Setas (The Mushrooms), this colossal, undulating wave of timber dominates the Plaza de la Encarnación. It is, as promised, the largest wooden structure in the world, designed by German architect Jürgen Mayer H., and its purpose is beautifully simple: to provide maximum shade in a city known as the “Frying Pan of Europe.”

A Beacon in the Andalusian Night

During the day, The Mushrooms offer vital relief from the searing sun. But at night, the entire structure transforms into a living sculpture of light and color. The energy shifts completely. The heat of the day dissipates, and the square below comes alive with families, street performers, and friends gathering beneath the massive, interconnected honeycomb of wooden panels.

We took the elevator up to the walkway—a winding, elevated path that traces the smooth curves of the “parasols.” It’s an architectural marvel; the geometry is complex and dizzying, making you feel as though you are walking inside the belly of a gentle, wooden beast.

The View from the Top

The view from the top is what makes the night visit truly magical. It’s a 360-degree panorama that perfectly frames Seville’s history within its modern context:

  • Looking North: The city lights stretch away, a soft, glittering sea of yellow and white.
  • Looking South: There is the magnificent, illuminated dome of the Cathedral and the Giralda, anchoring the skyline with their ancient stone and Gothic majesty. The perspective contrasts the massive scale of the 15th-century Christian power with the organic, fluid form of the 21st-century wooden structure.

The walkway itself is softly lit by embedded floor lights, guiding you along the curves that dip and rise, giving you multiple vantage points. It offers a unique and essential perspective on Seville—one that acknowledges its relentless climate and its willingness to embrace cutting-edge design while still reverently observing its glorious past. It’s a moment of quiet contemplation above the nightly buzz of one of Europe’s most vibrant cities.

The Metropol Parasol is more than just a canopy or a viewpoint; it’s a statement. It proves that in Seville, the old and the new do not clash; they coexist, each casting a beautiful light on the other.
