This summer adventure began right here in Wiesbaden, our home in Germany, as family arrived from the U.S. for a two-week journey through Central Europe — a trip filled with history, family laughter, and a few unforgettable detours. We set out to explore places where past and present meet: Germany’s royal cities, Poland’s pottery towns, and France’s riverfront charm — a loop through landscapes shaped by centuries of art, architecture, and even moments of U.S. military history.

We started with local favorites — the funicular train, Kurpark gardens, and the golden domes of Wiesbaden’s Russian Orthodox Church — before heading east to Dresden, the “Jewel Box” of Germany, once reduced to ruins in World War II and rebuilt as a symbol of resilience. From there, our route led to the hauntingly beautiful Devil’s Bridge (Rakotzbrücke) and across the border to Bolesławiec, Poland, famed for its hand-painted pottery — a craft that found popularity among U.S. military families stationed in Europe after the war.

In Wrocław, we followed gnomes through cobbled streets and watched the lamplighter make his rounds — a city once devastated by conflict, now glowing with color and creativity. Then it was back west through Mainz, Rüdesheim’s vineyards, and on to Strasbourg, where half-timbered houses reflect in the river and history bends between France and Germany. Our final stops — Mannheim and Frankfurt — blended gardens, museums, and family downtime before flights home.

This wasn’t just a sightseeing trip; it was a journey through shared history. Each stop carried echoes of both European and American stories — from wartime reconstruction to the friendships built through decades of U.S. presence in Germany. Traveling these routes as a family, we didn’t just trace the past — we added our own chapter to it.
