From castles and mountains, our journey took us underground to Slănic, Romania, home to one of the largest salt mines in Europe. What looks like a quiet town on the surface hides a vast labyrinth below—cavernous chambers carved entirely out of salt.

Walking through the mine felt otherworldly, with walls shimmering in streaks of white and gray. The scale was staggering—massive halls large enough to host sports courts, exhibitions, and even concerts. It’s hard to believe that centuries ago, this same mine was a source of wealth that once helped fund the Habsburg Empire.

The cool, clean air inside made it easy to understand why the mine is also used as a wellness retreat today, believed to benefit breathing and overall health. For us, it was equal parts history lesson and adventure—stepping into a space that’s been both an economic engine and a cultural landmark.

Slănic reminded us that not all treasures sit in castles—some lie deep underground, waiting to be discovered.
