Our journey through Transylvania brought us to Bran Castle, perched dramatically on a rocky hilltop. Often called “Dracula’s Castle,” it’s one of the most famous landmarks in Romania—thanks to its connection with both history and legend.

The castle is most often linked to Vlad the Impaler, remembered as the “cruellest reigning prince” of Wallachia. Though he likely never lived here, his reputation for brutality gave rise to a legacy that outlasted his reign. Centuries later, in 1897, Bram Stoker drew on Vlad’s name and the eerie atmosphere of Transylvania for his novel Dracula, forever tying Bran Castle to the vampire legend.

Walking its stone halls and narrow staircases, it was easy to imagine how stories could grow here—between the dark wood beams, hidden passages, and views over the misty Carpathians. Yet beyond the myths, Bran Castle also tells the story of Romanian royalty, serving at times as both fortress and residence.

Myth vs. History 🦇⚔️

  • The Myth: Bram Stoker’s Dracula describes a Gothic fortress perched high above a valley in Transylvania, home to the infamous vampire Count Dracula. The book popularized the idea of Bran Castle as Dracula’s lair, even though Stoker never visited Romania.
  • The History: Bran Castle was built in the late 14th century as a defensive stronghold against Ottoman invasions and to control mountain trade routes. Vlad the Impaler (1431–1476) did rule nearby Wallachia and was infamous for his harsh punishments, but there’s no evidence he ever lived in or ruled from Bran.
  • The Legacy: The blending of real history and dark fiction has made Bran Castle a symbol of Transylvania worldwide. Today, it’s celebrated as both a national monument and a cultural icon—where visitors can step into both medieval history and gothic imagination.

History, legend, and imagination all meet at Bran. Whether you come for Vlad, Dracula, or just the view, the castle leaves a lasting impression.
